Why An HTML Sitemap Is Important for SEO

HTML sitemap is a page that contains all essential links to your website. It is useful for users as well as necessary for SEO according to the Google Webmaster Guideline.

If you have an HTML sitemap, your users can find all useful links to your website on a single page. It is the most efficient way to build internal links and distribute link juice to the inner pages. Many bloggers and webmasters don’t care about this sitemap at all. Here we are going to explain why it is important and how you can build it correctly.

Remember that, an HTML sitemap provides all essential links to your website and gives a full structure of your site. This page should not contain A to Z links that are related to your site, but it includes all vital links to your site, from where you can reach every single page of your website. Here is the example of my sitemap, where you can find every link that I posted day by day.

Why HTML sitemap is essential:

HTML sitemap is valuable for human users as they can find a quick and easy way to navigate throughout your website. You can sort your all archive links, category links and page links on a specific page, from where your users can reach every nook and corners of your website.

Like the above picture, an HTML sitemap is linking throughout the one page to another. And this type of linking is essential for SEO. Because they are sending sitewide link juice and help the web crawlers to crawl every page of the website.

How to build an HTML sitemap:

If you want to develop a quick HTML sitemap, you can include your blog archives, important pages and categories on a single page. You can exclude unimportant and thin pages from your sitemap. Now place the sitemaps links in your website’s footer area. External links to your sitemap are essential for SEO, as it sends link juice to all of your page rather than a single page. Try to build external links pointing to your sitemap is much stronger than a link pointing to your homepage. Because this type of link-building sends a positive signal to the search engine.  And helps to identify the essential pages by priority.

Designing an HTML sitemap:

HTML Sitemap is not a critical design. It’s effortless to create. But there are some basic guidelines you should know while creating an HTML sitemap. These rules are:

  1. Create A link on your Homepage: To give a quick and easy way to access your sitemap, you can put a link on your homepage. This way, search engines and human users both can easily find and access it.
  2. Make it user-friendly as much as you can: Maybe you think that, why should I make a link page user-friendly? But, trust me, the sitemap is a more vital page then you think. It’s an overview of your website. So try to make it neat and clean, organized, easy to navigate and quick-loading. Make sure that your visitors feel comfortable while browsing the sitemap. If the website users can easily explore your sitemap, it’s also good for the SEO too.
  3. Don’t put more than 100 links in a single sitemap: If you want to avoid link-spam, it’s necessary to keep your sitemap links fewer than 100. Try to link the page that is important for your website. Don’t list every page and links that exist on a site. If you put every link in a single Page, it could be hard for the user’s to find the appropriate links. If you have more than 100 essential links to list, break these links in multiple sitemaps and link them all in an Index sitemap. So, that search engine and human users can find and follow the link as their need.
  4. Use the vital keyword as an anchor text: It’s a good SEO practice to using the important keywords as an anchor text. It helps the users to find the right topics and page what they are looking for. It’s also beneficial for Search engines too. Because Search engines can easily find the important keywords for this site and structure them accordingly.

Sitemaps are designed to present links simply and creatively. It should not be too much eye-catching, flashy or dressed up rather than the simplest outlook. The simplest form of a sitemap is listing links with the appropriate anchor text that described your site the best. All you need to use the <ul> <li> and <a> tags to build a sitemap. However, if you don’t want to make your sitemap from scratch you can pay for the SEO service, who can help you to build the sitemap according to your theme. If you have not enough money you can update your website manually that only requires a few minutes to complete. I hope this information will help you to create your HTML sitemap.
